Workshop: Afrikaans and sport

Workshops: 1. The Afrikaans Language – African or European, 2. An A-⁠Z of sport in the Low Countries. Attended by twenty pupils and two teachers from ZSP Witkowo.

On Friday 11th January 2019, Prof. Jerzy Koch and Dr. Chris Joby each gave presentations. Prof. Koch spoke first. His presentation, entitled ‘the Afrikaans language – African or European’, concerned the history of and various theories concerning the origins of the Afrikaans language. His speech was accompanied by a presentation of various photos, maps and diagrams. He also provided numerous examples of the language and music and Afrikaans songs. After this, Dr. Joby gave a talk entitled \\'An A-Z of sport in the Low Countries\\', in which he presented and discussed famous sportsmen and women from the Low Countries in 26 sports, one for each letter of the alphabet. The aim of this talk was to demonstrate what an important role sport plays in the life of people in the Netherlands and Belgium, and how successful some of the leading sportsmen and women in these countries are. He discussed not only well-known examples such as football and speed-skating, but also less well-known examples such as darts and Extreme Sports.
