PLM2007 Session: Visual communication
For over a decade Visual Communication has been one of the most burgeoning areas of research in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Its project is truly interdisciplinary drawing on semiotics, linguistics, art history, anthropology, and other related disciplines. The main aim of this PLM Session is to address the relationship between visual and verbal communication and across other modalities. Papers offering critical studies of multimodal texts (i.e. texts combining the following modes of communication in any configuration: image, colour, typography, film, sound, music, spoken and written language, and so on) are invited. Topics and areas of work to be addressed may include but are not limited to the following:
- the visual–verbal communication interface in the age of globalization;
- text–image relations;
- visual vs. verbal metaphor;
- social, political, cultural and educational dimensions of visual literacy;
- cross-cultural visual communication;
- linguistic/semiotic landscapes (signage, graffiti, posters, etc.);
- non-verbal communication (kinesics, proxemics, face, body image, adornment and mutilation, dress codes, etc.);
- communication in hyperreality;
- medium as text.
Preference will be given to empirical, data-based papers.
Each paper will be given 30 minutes, including 10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts should be prepared ina ccordance with the general submission guidelines and submitted by email to plm@ifa.amu.edu.pl.
