“Reflexivity and writing up qualitative research”
Abstract: This talk will consider the role of writing in qualitative research, particularly in relation to researcher reflex-ivity. Drawing on notions of reflexivity primarily but not exclusively as they have been developed in linguistic ethnography (Patino-Santos 2020), I will consider how we understand reflexivity and the implications of adopting a reflexive stance in relation to research. I will address the place of reflexivity within the context of qualitative research more generally, particularly in relation to criteria which have been developed for evaluating the quality of qualitative research (Tracy 2010). The talk will describe a variety of ways in which writing can be used to develop reflexivity as a qualitative researcher (e.g. Creese et al. 2017), while also considering some of the challenges to this posed by the institutional conditions of writing in contemporary academic workplaces (Tusting et al. 2019).
The lecture will be held on Zoom. Please register at https://forms.office.com/r/LRWMiJVRWy to receive the link to the online meeting.
