Centre for Celtic Studies cordially invites you for a poetry evening with the National Poet of Wales Ifor ap Glyn. Ifor ap Glyn is a writer, TV producer and since 2016, the National Poet of Wales. He has published four volumes of poetry and contributed to many anthologies. An active performer, he's taken part on many poetry tours including Lliwiau Rhyddid (The Colours of Freedom) and Y Gadair Wag (The Empty Chair). He represented Wales twice at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in the USA, and won the Crown for poetry at the National Eisteddfod in 1999 and 2013.
He has visited Poland once before to read his work, in 2003, and his poem
Ceiliog Mwyalchen (Kos) is currently featuring in a poster campaign on the streets of Warszawa. The poem is from his crown-winning sequence from 2013, and can be heard in the original Welsh here.(
https://vimeo.com/255547443/a289a784f9) The sequence explores the poet's response to a slight decline in the number of speakers of the Welsh language.
Born in 1961, Ifor was brought up in London; the fourth generation of his family to live there. His first novel, Tra Bo Dau (While there are two), is based on his upbringing in the city, and in 2016 one of his poems was projected on the side of the Parliament buildings in London.
He now lives in Caernarfon, north Wales, and is a keen member of the local poetry team that has twice won the annual knockout competition on BBC Radio Cymru.
During the evening we will hear Ifor’s poems with translations into Polish and English. The meeting will be interpreted into Polish.
The event accompanies Eisteddfod UAM, the festival of Welsh culture, organised by the Centre for Celtic Studies and Polish-Welsh Society. Check the festival’s website:
