The half-marathon is a footrace of 21 kilometers 97.5 meters (13.1 miles), exactly half of the most difficult Olympic endurance event, the marathon (42 km 195m; 26.2 mi). It remains one of the most popular road race distance for amateur athletes around the world, Poland included. Every year up to 200 half-marathons are organized around the country, with anything between 300 and 10,000 runners participating in each. As a testament to the popularity of the half-marathon the annual challenge of the Crown of Polish Half-Marathon was established in 2013.
The challenge requires runners to finish 5 out of select 10 races within a year, thus capturing the Crown is a test of both endurance and logistical skill. The
WA Running Team has been established in 2017 by the indomitable Kamil Kaźmierski, PhD under the gracious patronage of the Dean of the Faculty of English, Prof. Katarzyna Dziubalska-Kołaczyk. Several team members embarked on the Crown challenge the same year, and we are proud to announce
Halszka Bąk, PhD, has been officially confirmed as one of the 2451 runners in the country who completed the challenge for 2017.
Dr. Bąk’s Crown took her from the team’s home turf during the 10th Poznań Half-Marathon, through the excruciating ascents of the 18th Toyota Half-Marathon in Wałbrzych, the organizational horrors of the infamous 27th Philips Half-Marathon, and through the sudden heatwave during the legendary 40. Bieg Lechitów in Gniezno and the heavy casualties of the 4th Cracovia Half-Marathon. Running every race wearing the WA Running Team t-shirt, she secured the first Crown of what we hope shall become a respectable collection of achievements for the Team.
The WA Running Team invites new members, students and staff alike, to join the ranks for the start of the season for the team during the 11th Poznań Half-Marathon in spring. Until that time the Team Members wishes all amateur and professional athletes at the Faculty of English a mild, productive off-season for a powerful start into 2018 season. Many happy returns and many well-earned victories in 2018!
