The Public View of Language and Gender
Still Wrong After All These Years
2 March, Wednesday, 18:30, room 601A
Despite decades of linguistic research, stereotypes about the way women and men speak are alive and kicking. In her article Freed reviews news articles and online sources for evidence that the public is continuing to be exposed to a vast amount of information about sex and gender difference, which is reinforced by so-called scientific evidence from controversial brain science research.
Alice F. Freed is Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at Montclair State University, New Jersey. Her research interests include language and gender, discourse analysis and sociolinguistics. She is author co-editor of Rethinking Language and Gender Research: Theory and Practice (with Victoria Bergvall and Janet Bing, 1996).
