We are all born linguists: Neuroscience and second language learning methods
Tuesday, 08 March 2011, 18:30, Room 601A
Abstract
The purpose of this talk is to present currently used methods which successfully improve and accelerate the process of learning English as a foreign language by incorporating neuroscience and new technologies. Two methods will be discussed:
- FastForward – invented by American researchers from the “Scientific Learning”. Based on the concept of brain plasticity, the method improves the major language components, including second language phonetics. The method has been introduced to 40 countries. Since 2006, FastForward has been taught in Poland by “Espace”.
- Tomatis Auditory Training – an auditory stimulation programme. Developed by the ear, nose and throat specialist, dr Alfred Tomatis. The method applies electronically modified music to re-educate the listening system by stimulating and improving the way in which we process auditory information. Listening to the programme literally exercises and tones tiny muscles in the ear. This helps to build stronger multi-sensory pathways in the brain, which, in turn, improves the ability to process sounds and enhances communication and cognitive abilities.
Both methods are unique and effective in improving second language learning and learning in general.
Małgorzata Szurlej is a psychologist, an audio-psycho-phonologist, a lecturer, a coach, and a therapist. She graduated from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication, Paris X, Paris VII, Paris III Sorbonne Nouvelle (specialisation: social psychology, clinical psychology, psychotherapy). She gained professional experience in France and Great Britain. Mrs Szurlej has extensive experience in applying methods of an audio-psycho-phonological therapy in treating children, adolescents and adults. She specialises in human resources and interpersonal communication. Mrs Szurlej has introduced the Fast ForForward teaching method to Poland. Since 1999 she has been the Director of the "Espace" Psycho-Phonology-Audio Center. Mrs Szurlej closely co-operates with U.S. researchers from the "Scientific Learning".
