1 MA WRITING PORTFOLIO OFFICIAL SUBMISSION DEADLINE
17 April, 12:00-13:00
and
24 April, 11:30-13:00
TO: P. Kaszubski, 1MA writing coordinator
PLACE: 322A
Portfolios should be submitted in sets - either by group representative(s) or by group writing teachers. Do NOT simply leave the portfolios on my desk or in my pigeonhole !
NOTE: Teachers are advised to inspect portfolios prior to official submission. Students are expected to comply with these regulations under normal course conditions.
REQUIREMENTS:
Each portfolio should be contained in a single, light-coloured folder, clearly marked at the top of the cover (name, group, writing course teacher, chosen theme). I reserve the right to turn down a portfolio not meeting these requirements.
The contents of a portfolio should be:
1 argumentative or expository research essay (range: 1,500-2,000 words) - major, take-home research essay on a specified topic within the theme selected at the start of the year. The compete set of drafts and the bibliography list must be included. IFA style sheet standards apply.
1 in class timed essay (range: 300+ words) - written in class in response to a question related to 2 complementary graphic, textual, or statistical prompts, which also must be enclosed. Submit the original version written in class, initialled by the teacher at the bottom of the text. Input from the prompts must be used to some extent; IFA stylesheet standards apply for citations; the final Bibliography is optional.
1 summary of a longer (semi-)academic text (range: 200-250 words) - take-home work; the source text must be one from the common pool of articles distributed among the teachers early in the winter semester. There is no need to supply the source texts, therefore. In the case of revised summaries, all the drafts must be included.
Each student makes a selection from among her/his sample texts written during the course. Take-home essays must be clipped together with 1-2 earlier drafts, but external (top) drafts should be typed and double spaced on A4-sized white paper, except for in class timed essays, which should be submitted only in their original form, and with the teacher's initials at the end as proof of originality. No marksheets completed by the teacher should be included in the portfolio.
Please note that incomplete portfolios or ones substantially deviating from the above standards will be marked down or failed. Portfolio marking criteria are available on line.
The portfolio readings will take place during April and May. The folders will be returned to the authors by the writing teachers.
