On Friday, May 28, 2021 there was the first, but hopefully not the last, Zoom meeting between faculty members and students from Kobe Women’s University and the Faculty of English of Adam Mickiewicz University.
Professor Kazumi Noguchi, Head of the International Programs in Kobe talked about Kobe University and introduced the speakers, Professor Yoshio Nishide, Head of the Department of English, who teaches Shakespeare studies (Shakespeare and Japanese popular culture) and Hirishi Kawamori from the Department of History, who showed the audience Kobe’s historical sights and outlined the history and current research carried out at the Center for Performing Arts.
Professor Joanna Pawelczyk, Dean of the Faculty of English, AMU, talked about the Faculty of English and various areas of research carried by its members. She also stressed the importance of international relations in our work. Professor Radosław Dylewski showed the audience various programs currently run by the Faculty of English. Professor Liliana Sikorska took the audience on a virtual tour from the Ławica Poznań airport to Collegium Minus and the Imperial District talking about four seminal figures in the history of the city and the University: Henryk Wieniawski, Adam Mickiewicz, Frederick Chopin and Jan Ignacy Paderewski, while dr. Tomasz Skirecki demonstrated how the University and the Faculty of English are linked with city’s present and future endeavors.
The students from Japan shared with us their thoughts on Japanese animation, traditional Japanese food, traditional Japanese house and students’ life at Kobe Women’s university. The representatives of AMU presented a survey on how Japan is perceived in Poland and imparted their fascination with Japanese manga culture. The students then continued their discussions in breakout rooms.
The spirit of congeniality pervaded the meeting and we all hope that after the introductions of our respective institutions we will continue the exchange of ideas and encourage the students to learn more about Japan and Poland, respectively.
