Seachtain na Gaeilge is an annual celebration of the Irish language, and has been running since 1903. In Poznan in 2020, we marked it at the Faculty of English by inviting visitors from Ireland, France and the Embassy of Ireland in Warsaw to discuss how Irish is being maintained, revived and transformed in the 21st century.
Dr Sara Brennan (Université de Lorraine) discussed how the symbolic use of the language can lead people back to re-engaging with it; Dr Cassie Smith-Christmas (NUIG) explored the place of Irish in the multilingual repertoire of Polish families living in Ireland; Prof. Tadhg Ó hIfearnáin (NUIG) showed how the number of ‘core’ speakers of Irish in one Gaeltacht has not actually decreased, in contrast to the number of ‘casual’ Irish speakers; and Dr John Walsh (NUIG) looked at the revitalisationist founding aims of two community radio stations broadcasting in Irish and how the actual use of the language works out in practice. The seminar was opened by Dominic Berkeley, Second Secretary at the Embassy of Ireland, and the Dean of the Faculty of English, Prof. Joanna Pawelczyk, welcomed both the guests and the audience members, drawn from within and outside the Faculty. The Centre for Celtic Studies and the Faculty of English wish to acknowledge the financial support of the
Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in running this event.
