The Centre for Celtic Studies is offering a post-doc position in sociolinguistics/minority languages for a researcher to work on new speaker studies in Lusatia and Brittany, starting 1 October 2019. See below for details and how to apply.
Nazwa stanowiska/Position: Post-doc
Wymagania/Requirements:
- PhD in sociolinguistics or a related field (obtained no earlier than 7 years before the year of employment in the project)
- Good organizational and interpersonal skills
- Experience in conducting qualitative research
- High levels of competence in English, French and German
- Willingness to participate in intensive courses to learn Breton and Sorbian
- Evidence of a nascent good publication record

Opis zadań/Job Description:
The project ‘Rewitalizacja języka bez udziału jego rodzimych użytkowników: Studium języka bretońskiego w Górnej Bretanii oraz języka łużyckiego na Dolnych Łużycach / Language revitalization without native speakers: The cases of Breton in Upper Brittany and of Sorbian in Lower Lusatia’ is to investigate how two minority groups – Breton speakers in Upper Brittany (France) and Sorbian speakers in Lower Lusatia (Germany) – carry out language revitalization where the members of a particular community are non-native or ‘new’ speakers (O’Rourke, Pujolar & Ramallo 2015; Hornsby et al 2018). The main hypothesis to be tested in this project is whether such revitalization efforts are renewing the language community or if they are in fact transforming it into a new type of post-modern community, where language plays a much more symbolic role than previously thought. The postdoctoral researcher will play a leading role in gathering data through qualitative fieldwork in both sites and working with other research team members to analyze the results of the data collection.
