How to translate English phrasal verbs? Evaluation of corpus equivalents and student translations
The focus of this presentation is the English phrasal verb – a peculiar union of a verb and a particle (prepositional or adverbial) that often produces a unique meaning, uninferable from the meanings of its constituents. This semantic unpredictability of phrasal verbs (PVs) along with their specific syntactic configurations, poses major problems for the non-native speakers who often consciously choose to avoid using the structures and instead fall back on the synonymous, “safer”, Latinate verbs (MacArthur 1989). Adding to the comprehension difficulties is the often stressed informal and colloquial character of phrasal verbs. The widespread conviction that PVs are typical of unofficial discourse contributes to their “pedagogical notoriety” but, at the same time, convinces learners that mastery of phrasal verbs (along with idioms) is the key to achieving the much-desired, native-like command of English. The features described above add up to a vivid picture of a lexical item so concise in form, yet complex in content. It is no surprise that phrasal verbs constitute a problematic group for both bilingual lexicographers and translators. However, contrastive translation studies on these structures are still rare (e.g. Masiulanis 1974; Claridge 2002; Aldahesh 2009; Dezortová 2010).
To analyze how phrasal verbs are translated into Polish, an English-Polish unidirectional parallel corpus, PHRAVERB, of 926,725 words in both languages, has been created. The corpus consists of 408 English press articles (95% from American newspapers, 5% from British newspapers) and their translations published on three major Polish internet news portals between 2006 and 2010.
As many as 602 different PVs have been identified in a total of 2,514 occurrences. 56% of PVs found in the corpus have been translated using lexicographic equivalents found in the leading English-Polish (E-P) general-purpose dictionaries. In 13% of the cases the phrasal verb was omitted in translation while the remaining 30% have been rendered using non-lexicographic equivalents thus serving as examples of translators’ creativity. The paper looks at selected examples of corpus-generated equivalents in terms of their accuracy and possible eligibility for inclusion in future E-P dictionaries. Additionally, 40 sentences from PHRAVERB have been selected for translation by 55 students to see how the equivalents produced by them correspond to those found in the corpus. As expected, students had difficulty in finding the right translation for some of the PVs, which is why a parallel corpus like PHRAVERB might serve a didactic purpose in translator training and English language acquisition.

Spontaneous defining by native speakers of English - a report on the second part of the survey
The presentation is a report on the second part of a major study that aims to verify the defining styles that native speakers of English employ when asked to spontaneously define words. The spontaneous responses are compared with definitions in dictionaries to check whether lexicographers could draw upon folk defining techniques to write more user-friendly definitions. The study was divided into two main parts based on written and spoken elicitation. In the Spontaneous Defining Spoken Task (SDST) - native speakers of English, mostly younger adults, university students were asked to provide definitions for several items within a limited amount of time. The distractors were discarded and the nine tested nouns (abstract and concrete) were analyzed. The responses constitute a database, each response classified into defining styles according to the length/complexity and the style of the response in terms of grammar and semantics. The classifications were also analyzed quantitatively. The distribution of different defining styles was investigated. The results were compared with the written part as well as some previous studies conducted on native speakers of Polish. The analysis showed that there is one major, universal and common defining style characteristic of both the English and the Polish culture.

Integracja a (nie)obecność migrantów w polskich mediach i polskiej sferze publicznej. Spotkanie odbędzie się 18 maja 2012 r. w godzinach 11.30 – 14.30 w siedzibie ISP (Warszawa, ul. Szpitalna 5/22).
Wejście Polski do Unii Europejskiej zdecydowanie zmieniło sytuację kraju w kwestii zarządzania przepływami migracyjnymi. Potrzeba dostosowania polskich rozwiązań prawnych do wymogów unijnych oraz zróżnicowana struktura migracji do Polski zmotywowały polski rząd do podjęcia prac nad kompleksową strategią migracyjną. Wyrazem tej tendencji jest, np. ustawa abolicyjna ze stycznia 2012 r. oraz nowelizacja ustawy o obywatelstwie. Tendencje te rodzą pytania o stosunek polskiego społeczeństwa do imigrantów oraz możliwości ich integracji. W kształtowaniu wizerunku cudzoziemców kluczową rolę odgrywają media. Jak wskazują wciąż nieliczne dostępne badania, cudzoziemcy zbyt rzadko są angażowani przez środowisko dziennikarskie do komentowania swojej sytuacji.
Na pytania odnośnie sytuacji migrantów oraz ich integrację odpowiadają dziennikarze, akademicy i eksperci reprezentujący organizacje pozarządowe lub instytucje publiczne. Podczas seminarium zostaną przedstawione wyniki badań przeprowadzonych w projekcie MEDIVA (Media for Diversity and Migrant Integration - Consolidating Knowledge & Assessing Media Practices across the EU), którego celem jest wzmacnianie zdolności mediów do odzwierciedlania różnorodności społeczeństw europejskich oraz mechanizmów i procesów integracji imigrantów. Ponadto w ramach projektu wypracowywano wskaźniki pozwalające na monitorowanie mediów oraz przygotowano cztery raporty tematyczne analizujące zawartość mediów, tworzenie newsów, szkolenie dziennikarzy, proces rekrutacji oraz kodeksy etyczne ze względu na ich zdolność do odzwierciedlania różnorodności społecznej i kulturowej w mediach.
Seminarium ma na celu podjęcie dyskusji na temat roli mediów w debacie na temat różnorodności oraz integracji imigrantów. Badania przeprowadzono m.in. w oparciu o analizę treści wybranych mediów (Polsat, Tok Fm, Gazeta Wyborcza, Rzeczpospolita, Wielkopolska Telewizja Kablowa) oraz ankiety i wywiady z dziennikarzami zatrudnionymi w wyżej wymienionych redakcjach.
This paper proposes how the process of numeralisation of Polish nominal numerals proceeded, including when and how it started, as well as what it resulted in. It is argued that the higher numerals (5<) have shifted from nouns to a new category of numerals, with morphosyntactic properties specific only to them. The investigation focuses on dziesięć 'ten', sto 'hundred', and tysiąc 'thousand', shown to be at different stages of this process. On the basis of their historical development, i.e. the paradigmatic changes that affected them, and the accompanying adjustments in their syntax, it is proposed that numeralisation involves a syntactic change: reduction of the biphrasal nominal structure into a monophrasal one with the once-nominal-numeral lexicalizing the Num0 in the extended projection of its counted noun. The investigation covers the period between 15th-21st centuries and draws on the data from both literary monuments and normative texts from the relevant periods.

Integration and (Non)Representation of Migrants in Polish Media and the Polish Public Sphere
What is the media role in shaping the image of migrants in Poland? Are migrants adequately engaged by journalists to partake in newsmaking and comment on their situation? Those as well as wider questions on the role of the media in discourse on diversity and integration of immigrants in Poland was discussed during the seminar organized by the Institute of Public Affairs and School o English, Adam Mickiewicz University in Warsaw on May 18, 2012.
During the first part of the seminar the results of research carried out within the MEDIVA project were presented (Media for Diversity and Migrant Integration - Consolidating Knowledge & Practices Assessing Media across the EU). The aim of the project is to improve the capacity of the media to reflect the diversity of European societies and the mechanisms and processes of immigrant integration. Presentation of the project objectives and results were given by representatives of A. Mickiewicz University: dr. hab. Michał Krzyżanowski, dr. Artur Lipinski, prof. Małgorzata Fabiszak and Samuel Bennett, MA. Panelists focused their presentations mainly on the results of content analysis of Polish and foreign media and on indicators assessing the ability of Polish and other media to reflect diversity and promote integration. They also presented the scope of MEDIVA thematic reports (see below).
The second part of the seminar was devoted to the panel discussion, moderated by dr. hab. Michał Krzyżanowski from IFA, A. Mickiewicz University, with participation of prof. Michał Buchowski (A. Mickiewicz University), Justyna Seges Frelak (ISP), Jakub Janiszewski (Tok FM), dr. Joanna Fomina (Stefan Batory Foundation) and Myroslava Keryk ("Our Choice" Foundation). Experts pointed out various aspects of media impact on shaping the image of migrants in Poland, and thus on the course and dynamics of integration processes. They also emphasized the fact that interest in the situation of migrants among Polish journalists is relatively small. This situation is connected with the fact that “migration issues" in Poland are not a part of political agenda, and therefore do not attract much interest of public opinion and decision makers.
Furthermore, panelists repeatedly underlined the need to promote migrant success stories in the media and the positive aspects of their integration, for example with the local community. According to the current trend, Polish media either report on topics related to migration mostly in cases when the violation of their rights takes place or show migrants as individuals with a complicated legal situation and low financial status. That is why migrants are very often presented, and thus perceived, as victims. An important issue that emerged in the discussion was also the fact that media reports have impact not only on the perception of migrants by the Poles, but also on the self-perceptions of migrants by themselves, which is of profound influence on the process of integration. • media content (what and how is presented in the news)
• media newsmaking/programme production practices (news filters for instance)
• media recruitment and employment practices (provisions for recruiting minority/migrant staff, careers of this staff, existence of glass ceiling)
• media training practices (on migrant reporting, diversity management)

On May 17th, 2012, dr hab. Modified idioms with HAND: A corpus-based study of the metaphor-metonymy interplay
This presentation deals with idiomatic expressions with the lexical component HAND whose motivation consists in metonymy intertwined with metaphor. The project brings out the decomposable nature of body part idioms, and contributes to the recent trend in cognitive linguistics towards explicating metaphorical and metonymic motivation of multiword units (Boers – Lindstromberg 2006).
The aims of this project are: 1) to specify the metaphor-metonymy interaction in the selected expressions; 2) to identify the most frequent creative modifications that the target items undergo; 3) to establish how modification types affect the motivation of idioms; 4) to investigate whether the most typical formal alternations are reflected in the entries of three paper dictionaries of idioms: Collins Cobuild Idioms Dictionary, Cambridge Idioms Dictionary, Oxford Idioms Dictionary for Learners of English; 5) to discover potential new meaning developments of the target items. The four idioms under analysis have been extracted from the EnTenTen corpus of the English language, accessed via the Sketch Engine.
It is shown that the types of ‘metaphtonymy’ distinguished by Goossens (2002) frequently demonstrate more intricate patterns where cumulative and integrated metaphtonymies are combined. Secondly, the creative occurrences of the HAND idioms in the corpus are grouped into five modification types presented by Stathi (2007). In this project, the scope of analysis is extended in order to take into account other modifiers (e.g. adverbials, genitive forms), apart from adjectives. It turns out that, although contextual modifications do not drastically change the idiom’s motivation type, they do affect the degree of metaphoricity. Last but not least, the occurrences of idioms in the corpus are compared with the definitions and examples in the dictionaries. On the whole, the lexicographic treatment of formal idiom variation tends to reflect the traditional view of idioms as stable multiword units. Some examples of semantic transformations observed in the corpus might become candidates for inclusion in the dictionaries in the form of new senses or subsenses, however, a larger sample of data should confirm the preliminary results of this study.

The MEDIVA project is organizing a Final European Workshop in Brussels on 15 June 2012 to present the MEDIVA Diversity Indicators which seek to assess the role of the Media in Reflecting Diversity and Promoting Migrant Integration. The workshop will present the overall findings of the MEDIVA Pilot Study Assessing 35 Media Outlets in 6 European Countries (Britain, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Poland) and will organize two roundtables on the following topics:
What contributions can the media make in promoting migrant integration in European societies? and
How is the media profession changing in the 21st century? What is the impact of these changes for Migrants and Migration related news?
