The bilingual entry – a comparison of four English-Polish-English general purpose dictionaries   

A bilingual general purpose dictionary is the reference book that many translators first reach for when translating. The entry with all its features serves an important function as a starting point in the search for the desired information – regardless of the medium of the dictionary. The presentation focuses on the graphic and structural organization of the bilingual entry with implications for the translation process.

dr Anna Ewert: Beyond transfer: L2 users' perceptions of L1 norms

It is assumed that the two languages are integrated in the bilingual mind (e.g. Cook 2002). Transfer from the L2 to the L1 has been well-documented (cf. Cook 2003). However, L2 knowledge and use seems to have an effect on the general rather than specific aspects of multilingual proficiency by affecting cognition and metalinguistic awareness (Cenoz 2003). This assumption will be tested in two studies, aiming to examine the effect of bilingualism on the acquisition of L1 morphosyntax and on judgements of accuracy of lexical borrowings from the L2. The results of these studies show that crosslinguistic interaction (CLIN) leads to differences between bilinguals and monolinguals in the acquisition and perception of L1 norms. These differences extend beyond transfer understood as incorporation of elements from one language to another.

dr Agnieszka Chmiel: The linguistic makeup of a conference interpreter - a post-doc research project progress report

In order to leverage the synergy effect of psycholinguistics and Interpreting Studies (including the latest research by Christoffels and de Groot (2006)), my interdisciplinary post-doc research project draws upon both fields to compare the performance and information processing of professional interpreters and interpreting trainees. A longitudinal study is conducted to compare the performance of the same trainees before and after two years of interpreter training to identify which cognitive variables predict their success in training and which linguistic skills develop considerably as a result of practice.

While conference interpreters are a special case of bilinguals (since they actively use their both languages in the very same context), EU staff interpreters are a special case of conference interpreters (since they work only into their mother tongue). Both of these groups of professionals will be examined to get more insight into the interlingual links between the working languages as a function of their specific unidirectional or bidirectional use. The project results may offer some contribution to interpreter training design, psycholinguistics, the study of bilingualism and theoretical models of conference interpreting (e.g. revision of Gile's Gravitational Model of Linguistic Availability (1995)).

Next Friday, 23.03.2007 at 11:30 in C1, Dr Anthea Fraser Gupta, Senior Lecturer in English Language at the University of Leeds, is going to give a talk on "Standard English in the world". She is going to address the crucial questions facing everybody interested in the role, form and status of English nowadays, especially linguists, EFL teachers and researchers into all aspects of culture:

• How to define Standard English?

• Is there one Standard English or many Standard Englishes?

• What to do with variation within Standard English?

• How to approach Standard English in the EFL context?

Both staff and students, are cordially invited to the lecture, especially that it is scheduled during the duty hour when everybody can attend.

Dr Gupta specialises in World English(es), bilingualism, language contact, language acquisition and sociolinguistics. She spent 21 years as a university lecturer in Singapore, and cooperates with the Oxford English Dictionary and Encarta as an expert on words of Southeast Asian origin. She is taking active part in the current debate on Standard English and English as a World Language. Her voice can be heard in specialist international pubications devoted to this topical issue. She maintains an extensive personal website on Singapore English, and also contributes to Language Varieties Network and to The Postcolonial Web. She is also interested in innovative teaching methodologies and in exploring the possibilities of the internet in education (see here) .

Dr Gupta is visiting IFA to begin, what we hope to become, a regular exchange of staff and students with the School of English at Leeds. At the moment we are finalising the ERASMUS exchange for staff, hopefully starting next year, and we will be working to extend this cooperation to include students. School of English at Leeds is a 5-star department at one of the top British universities, rated as "excellent" both nationally and internationally together with other 35 departments of the University of Leeds. Leeds is in the UK top-ten in research power, market share of research funding and the number of applicants. (University of Leeds web site.)

Professor Diane Boehm's visit to IFA UAM

Diane Boehm is the Director of Instructional Support Programs at Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan. She coordinates faculty development, conducts an annual Summer Institute for new faculty, directs the University Writing Program, and teaches courses in composition. For the past four years, she has collaborated with a colleague at Poznan University of Technology in Poland to develop course assignments in which students of both universities carry out a shared project online, using the Blackboard course management system. Transforming Teaching through Technology (for faculty)

Zmiany w nauczaniu dzięki technologii (dla wykładowców)

New technologies have not only revolutionized our everyday lives; they also offer exciting possibilities to transform teaching. The pedagogical power of technological tools depends on vital aspects of faculty preparation, including appropriate learning management systems, matching of synchronous and asynchronous tools to course objectives, and support for users. Other factors to consider include student access and institutional support systems. Panel members will use examples and models from their own teaching to demonstrate successful strategies.

Nowe technologie (ICT) zrewolucjonizowały nasze życie codzienne. Powstają też dzięki nim nowe frapujące możliwości zmian w dydaktyce. Skuteczność pedagogiczna narzędzi technologicznych zależy od takich podstawowych czynników jak: (a) przygotowanie nauczycieli akademickich, w szczególności w zakresie systemów zarządzania dydaktyką (LMS), (b) dostosowanie narzędzi synchronicznych i asynchronicznych do celów danego kursu, (c) system pomocy dla użytkowników. Inne czynniki, które należy rozważyć to kwestie dostępu i wsparcia instytucjonalnego. Uczestnicy dyskusji panelowej przedstawią przykłady udanego wykorzystania strategii ICT w ich własnej dydaktyce.

Possibilities and Perils on the Road to E-Learning (for faculty/administrators)

Szanse i zagrożenia na drodze do e-learningu (dla wykładowców i administratorów)

Most universities today either offer or have considered E-Learning. Developing successful E-Learning courses requires attention to critical factors for success, such as faculty training, student access, and institutional support systems, in order to achieve the five pillars of quality in online education: student satisfaction, access, learning effectiveness, faculty satisfaction and institutional cost effectiveness. Models and examples of successful E-Learning courses, both blended and online, demonstrate the possibilities.

Większość współczesnych uniwersytetów ma już, bądź rozważa, ofertę dydaktyki poprzez e‑learning. Opracowanie efektywnych kursów w tym medium wymaga zwrócenia uwagi na takie ważne czynniki jak: (a) szkolenie wykładowców, (b) dostęp do systemu przez studentów, (c) wsparcie instytucjonalne, które umożliwiają osiągnięcie pięciu kryteriów wysokiej jakości w zdalnym nauczaniu: (1) zadowolenie studentów, (2) dostęp, (3) efektywność nauki, (4) zadowolenie wykładowców i (5) optymalizacja kosztów. Modele i przykłady udanych kursów opartych na e-learningu, całkowicie lub częściowo zdalnych, demonstrują różne możliwości w tym zakresie.

Studia pierwszego stopnia

Studia niderlandystyczne oznaczają znaczne poszerzenie dotychczasowej oferty Instytutu, który już w 1998 roku wprowadził do swojego programu nauczania dwuletnią specjalizację niderlandystyczną dla słuchaczy studiów magisterskich o kierunku anglistycznym. Zgromadzone przez ubiegłe lata doświadczenia i zbudowany od podstaw profesjonalny zespół nauczycieli akademickich pozwoliły przekształcić dotychczasową specjalizację w trzyletnie studia I stopnia, które w formie studiów licencjackich są dostępne dla wszystkich chętnych.

Studenci naszej niderlandystyki będą mogli brać udział w wymianie międzynarodowej Socrates/Erasmus; zamierzamy także włączyć się do innych programów umożliwiających wyjazdy zagraniczne na praktyki językowe oraz dających szansę na semestralne studia za granicą (Ceepus). Zakład Kultury Literatury i Języka Niderlandzkiego i Afrikaans aktywnie wspiera swoich studentów w uzyskiwaniu stypendiów na letnie kursy językowe w Belgii i Holandii. Rokrocznie organizujemy międzynarodowe egzaminy językowe na tzw. Certyfikat Języka Niderlandzkiego jako Języka Obcego (CNaVT, Het Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal).

Na dobrej drodze jest sprawa aplikacji o finansowe wsparcie naszej nowej inicjatywy dydaktycznej. Dzięki temu będziemy mogli w nowym roku akademickim dysponować subsydium startowym Niderlandzkiej Unii Językowej (Nederlandse Taalunie), które pozwoli na znaczne wzbogacenie zbiorów biblioteki niderlandystycznej, zakup nowego sprzędu audio-wizualnego czy zapraszanie wykładowców z Niderlandów.

Studia na specjalności FILOLOGIA NIDERLANDZKA mają w zgodzie z wymogami czasu przede wszystkim charakter kulturoznawczy. Oprócz obszernego modułu intensywnej nauki języka niderlandzkiego od podstaw (praktyczna znajomość języka, gramatyka opisowa, ćwiczenia tłumaczeniowe itp.), program obejmuje przedmioty dające absolwentom najwyższą kompetencję kulturową i umożliwiające interpretację różnych zjawisk kulturowych z obszaru języka niderlandzkiego, czyli Belgii/Flandrii, Holandii z jej zamorskimi częściami, jak Antyle, oraz z dawnych kolonii holenderskich, jak Surinam, dawna Gujana. Do pakietu przedmiotów ułatwiających studentom rozumienie współczesnej kultury jako zjawiska wielobiegunowego należą m.in. obszerne wprowadzenie do popularnych obecnie studiów kulturowych, teoria literatury uwzględniająca najnowsze trendy w badaniach i rozumieniu tekstów czy historia literatury obejmująca zarówno dorobek Holendrów i Flamandów, jak i niderlandzkojęzyczną literaturę kolonialną.

Uruchomienie studiów niderlandystycznych jest także odpowiedzią na rosnące zapotrzebowanie lokalnego rynku pracy, który dzięki znacznym inwestycjom firm holenderskich i belgijskich oczekuje wykształconych kadr, dysponujących dobrą znajomość języka i kultury niderlandzkiej.

The Center for Language Teaching Materials would like to inform you about a series of ELT presentations/workshops which will be organized in the summer semester 2007 as part of in-service teacher training and professional development programme at IFA.
We are planning to offer you 4 workshops held on Fridays before the IFA Friday Lectures; the dates are as follows:

The workshops will start at 4 p.m. and take approx.90 minutes; room 601A. You will receive the confirmation about the date and venue of each session well in advance. The presentations/workshops will be given by dr Aleksandra Jankowska, dr Jacek Rysiewicz, dr Dorota Nowacka, dr Małgorzata Fabiszak and dr Magdalena Wrembel. A detailed list of topics and their short description will be available on Friday, Feb 9, 2007.
Attendance at the presentations/ workshops is obligatory for all EFL teachers and doctoral students, but all colleagues interested in increasing their professional expertise are cordially welcome as well.
