A Piece of Canada a Day / Canada Week / Ty-dzień Kanady PART FOUR

Canada is known for having more lakes than the rest of the world combined. It is believed that there may be as many as two million, and 563 of them have a surface area larger than 100 square kilometres. The list of the largest lakes includes Lake Huron in Ontario, Great Bear Lake in the Northwestern Territories, and Lake Superior, also in Ontario. There are large lakes in Manitoba as well, such as Lake Winnipegosis, Lake Manitoba, and Lake Winnipeg. Lake Winnipeg is Canada’s fifth and the world’s 11th largest lake. Interestingly, Canada also has its very own Dead Sea. The “Dead Sea of Canada”, namely Little Manitou Lake in Saskatchewan, is known for its salinity content, which is five times higher than the ocean, or approximately half that of the Dead Sea in Israel and Jordan. Fed by underground springs, the 13.3 square km lake has mineral salt concentrations of 180,000 mg per litre, what makes it extremely buoyant, and enables swimmers to effortlessly float on their back.
