What lexical information do L2 learners select in a dictionary? The influence of L2 learners’ look-up preferences on incidental vocabulary learning
The purpose of this presentation is to discuss results that emerged from the study concerning incidental vocabulary learning. The author will report on the study conducted among secondary school learners of English as a foreign language (the research tool for this study was a computer application). The research was conducted with the purpose of checking what lexical information L2 learners select in an electronic dictionary while doing a reading task, the phenomenon of incidental vocabulary learning and students’ lookup patterns. It was examined whether different lookup patterns influence students’ word retention. Another goal was to check the influence of animated pictures on incidental learning of new words. The background of the study, the computer application – the research tool, as well as the results will be discussed during this presentation.
