Come sing with us! Students and faculty, their families and friends are welcome; no previous experience or ability to read music are necessary.
The Sacred Harp is a tradition of vibrant, loud a cappella hymn singing in four-part harmony which originated in New England in the 18th century and has been drawing people together for over two hundred years. It is open to everyone regardless of ability and is a communal experience as much as a musical one: we gather to sing for each other and make music together.
For the academically minded, Sacred Harp singing offers a unique insight into American vernacular culture and the history of Calvinist religious sensibility. For those who want relaxation after a day of classes or research, it is great fun and a way to take your mind off serious or abstract concerns. For those concerned about their phonetics, it will not ruin your British accent; you can sing in any accent you like.
