Multi-competence and Language Teaching
‘Multi-competence’ is defined as ‘the knowledge of more than one language in the same mind or the same community’. Multi-competent people differ from monolingual native speaker in many ways, such as how they think and use language and their knowledge of both languages. There is a spectrum of language users depending on the range of functions for which they use language and the status of the second language in terms of centrality or locality. This raises important questions for language teaching concerning the status of the native speaker, the role of the first language in language teaching, the goals of language teaching and the role of non-native teachers.
