What you always wanted to know about gender in Romania but didn't have the chance to ask
Wednesday, 13 May 2009, 17.00, room 601A
It often happens that we know more about distant cultures than we do about our neighbouring ones. This informal talk, part of the GAL meetings, is meant to shed some light on the gendered practices in Romania. By looking at some statistical information we shall see how different segments of the population feel about sensitive issues such as the role of women in and outside the domestic sphere, gender discrimination in the workplace, the so-called ”glass ceiling” phenomenon, the ‘sacred duty’ of motherhood etc. We shall also take a look at depictions of women in the media, mainly in women's magazines, and the way in which such depictions re-enforce traditional stereotypes of femininity. Also, we shall address the issue of women who belong to ethnic minorities, victims of a double-bind of prejudice and discrimination. Questions are strongly encouraged as the main purpose of this talk is to offer the non-Romanian audience an insight into the gendered texture of Romanian society.
