Serdecznie zapraszamy do obejrzenia dwóch wykładów przygotowanych przez wykładowczynie i wykładowców Wydziału Anglistyki w ramach tegorocznej Nocy Naukowców. Premiery wykładów odbędą się w dniu 27 listopada na kanale Nocy Naukowców 2020 w UAM na YouTube. Oba wykłady będzie można zobaczyć na tym kanale również po ich premierach, a w późniejszym terminie zostaną umieszczone na oficjalnym kanale Wydziału Anglistyki.
Kontynuując ideę zapoczątkowaną w zeszłym roku akademickim, chcielibyśmy zaprosić serdecznie wszystkich Państwa do udziału w świątecznej akcji charytatywnej doktorantek i doktorantów Szkoły Nauk o Języku i Literaturze.
W zeszłym roku udało nam się wspólnie wesprzeć podopiecznych i podopieczne Fundacji Tęczowe Rodziny, którzy znaleźli się w trudnej sytuacji życiowej, niewidome czteronogi z Fundacji Ja Pacze Sercem, a także stowarzyszenie Zupa na Głównym, które pomaga osobom ubogim i bezdomnym. Bardzo cieszymy się, że dzięki naszym wspólnym działaniom mogliśmy uszczęśliwić tak wiele osób i zwierzaków, integrując tym samym nasze środowisko doktoranckie.
W tym roku chcielibyśmy zaangażować się w pomoc wyjątkowej osobie, która jest częścią naszej społeczności akademickiej SNJL – dr Agnieszce Wagner z Wydziału Neofilologii UAM, która od 10 lat zmaga się z ciężką chorobą nowotworową. Ze względu na bardzo kosztowne leczenie za granicą, najważniejszym wsparciem jakie możemy okazać dr Wagner jest to finansowe. Postanowiliśmy zatem stworzyć naszą własną doktorancką “Skarbonkę”, która umożliwi nam przyłączenie się do działającej już akcji na stronie siepomaga.pl (link poniżej).
Naszym celem jest zebranie jak największej kwoty na ratowanie życia naszej Nauczycielki oraz Koleżanki, dlatego zachęcamy do włączania w naszą akcję całą społeczność akademicką SNJL. Akcja potrwa do 23 grudnia 2020 r.

We invite presentations ranging from linguistics, literary and cultural studies as well as interdisciplinary projects. You can present either in Polish or in English.

Attention To People Like You? What Tyneside English pre-aspiration may suggest about changes from below
Abstract
Although the literature on language change has often replicated and discussed a pattern in which female speakers lead in changes that occur below the level of awareness, there is no consensus on why this pattern should arise. Interestingly, recent findings in endocrinology show that differences in prenatal testosterone exposure can impact learning patterns. In the light of these findings, we first present preliminary results consistent with the hypothesis that a biological factor, prenatal exposure to androgens, can have a small, continuous biasing effect on linguistic variation, namely the variable duration of pre-aspiration conditioned by voiceless obstruents in Tyneside English. Second, we propose an explanatory model in which the biological factor—prenatal testosterone exposure—creates subtle bias in how speakers learn linguistic variants and suggest that some reported sex effects are derivative. This model is compatible with the high tendency for females to lead in language change from below (Labov 1990: 206).

Why and how ‘nice’ comments may feel sexist

In this presentation we will discuss the most common type of sexually harassing behavior, i.e., gender harassment. Real-life examples from Polish and English will be presented with the question: why are they discriminatory? We will consider the importance of language and context in producing gender harassing acts and behaviors and discuss why seemingly innocent and ‘nice’ comments can feel disrespectful and offensive to others. Finally we will discuss how we can become more sensitive and respectful speakers as well as what we can do when a harassing remark is targeted at us.

Wielojęzyczność staje się normą, a nie wyjątkiem we współczesnym świecie. Osoby mówiące kilkoma językami obcymi są bardziej kreatywne, komunikatywne i lepiej radzą sobie z rozwiązywaniem problemów. Wykład ma na celu rozpowszechnianie w społeczeństwie wyników badań i informacji na temat wielojęzyczności, różnorodności językowej i edukacji wielojęzycznej oraz budowanie świadomości w tym zakresie.
Prezentacja przybliża pojęcie metafory oraz pokazuje, iż nie jest ona cechą charakterystyczną jedynie tekstów literackich. W tym celu najpierw zostanie krótko zdefiniowana sama metafora jako środek stylistyczny, następnie przedstawione zostaną jej liczne typy używane przez lekarzy oraz pacjentów, które na koniec zostaną zilustrowane fragmentami zarówno z polskich jak i anglojęzycznych fachowych czasopism medycznych oraz czasopism popularnonaukowych.
The US Embassy in Poland invites you to a Q&A with Kate Kelly about the history and rebirth of the campaign for women's rights in the United States. Many people, including Americans, would be surprised to hear that equal rights for women are not enshrined in the U.S Constitution. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was designed to fill that gap by guaranteeing equal legal rights for all Americans regardless of gender. Although Congress passed the amendment in 1972, it fell short of the necessary ratifications by state legislatures. Now, a new movement is reviving the fight - lawyer and activist Kate Kelly is one of the people leading the charge.

Kate Kelly is a zealous advocate and passionate activist. She has a JD from American University Washington College of Law, the only law school in the world founded by, and for, women. She graduated cum laude in 2012, and received the Class of 2012 Peter M. Cicchino Award for Outstanding Advocacy in the Public Interest. She is a vocal women’s rights champion in the U.S., and around the world. In her legal career she has had various incredible opportunities including working as an Ella Baker Fellow at the Center for Constitutional Rights; a law clerk at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights; a research assistant to the Chair of the United Nations Committee Against Torture in Geneva, Switzerland; a post-grad fellow at the Women’s Refugee Commission; an attorney at the RFK Center for Justice & Human Rights; Legal Advisor for Legal Action Worldwide working on sexual violence legislation in Somalia, and litigating before the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights; consultant for the United Nations High Commission on Refugees report Women on the Run; and Strategic Advocacy & Policy Counsel at the Planned Parenthood Association of Utah; Legal Fellow for the Human Rights in the U.S. Project at Columbia Law School; Human Rights Attorney at Equality Now. Kate believes the simple and popular adage that women’s rights are human rights, and is committed to legal advocacy and education for women and other marginalized groups. She is a nationally-known advocate for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, and Host of the podcast Ordinary Equality. She has a forthcoming book (Spring 2022) called “Ordinary Equality” about the history of the women who have shaped the U.S. Constitution.

The U.S. presidential election is a massive undertaking which officially lasts over ten months from the start of primary season to the general election. Learn more about the U.S. presidential election process, how COVID-19 affected the 2020 election, and what a presidential transition looks like.
Esther Bell joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 2009 after completing a B.A. in International Relations at Johns Hopkins University. She currently serves as an Economic Officer at the U.S. Embassy Warsaw. Prior to her assignment in Warsaw she worked as a Staff Assistant in the State Department’s European Bureau (2017-2018) and a Public Diplomacy Officer in the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (2015-2017). Her previous overseas assignments include consular tours in Bogota, Colombia (2013-2015) and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (2010-2012). Esther speaks Polish, Spanish, Amharic, and some French.
