Representations of Gender and Sexuality in Polish ELT Textbooks and Classroom ‒ project report

The ELT classroom constitutes an example of social and discursive space in which (constant) construction of gender and sexuality takes place. In today’s world where many social categories (including gender) are redefined and contested, it is imperative to look at how the educational context contributes (or not) to the students’ understanding and making sense of these constantly changing social arrangements. It is also vital to examine whether, for instance, the social changes pertaining to women taking on more agentive roles and men increasingly often functioning in family ones, or LGBTQ people being recognized by most Anglophone states, are reflected in current ELT textbooks.
gender and sexuality portrayals and constructions in texts and the (accompanying) images in selected ESL textbooks and dictionaries; represented discourses of dominant and/or alternative gender/sexuality relations (e.g. in textbook dialogues)
students’ uptake of and/or resistance to the gender/sexual narratives offered
negotiation of the gender/sexual categories in the classroom
publishers’ agendas and the Polish Ministry of Education policies vis-a-vis (non-) sensitivity to the social salience of gender/sexuality representations.
The above allow an assessment of whether and how ELT classroom contexts are keeping up with current social changes concerning gender and sexual relations, with the possibility of our making proposals to teachers, publishers and policy-makers.
In this talk we will give an overview of the research into gender and sexuality in the EFL context, concentrating in particular on textbooks, classroom interaction, and dictionaries. The bulk of the presentation will be devoted to introducing the Polish context of the EFL research as well as the project methodology.

The CASMACAT (Cognitive Analysis and Statistical Methods for Advanced Computer Aided
Translation) workbench is a new browser-based computer-assisted translation workbench for post-editing machine translation outputs. CASMACAT is a project co-funded by the European Union under the Seventh Framework Programme Project 287576 (ICT-2011.4.2).
The main features of this new workbench are:
1. Web-based technology which allows for easier portability across different machine
platforms and versions
2. Interactive translation prediction, suggesting to the human translator how to complete the
translation.
3. Interactive editing, providing additional information about the confidence of its
assistance.
4. Adaptive translation models, updating and adapting its models instantly based on the
translation choices of the user.
The translation field can be pre-filled by machine translation through a server connection and
also automatically updated online from an interactive machine translation server. Shortcut keys are used for functions such as navigating between segments.
The main innovation of the CASMACAT workbench is its exhaustive logging function. This
allows for completely new possibilities of analyzing translators' behavior both, in a qualitative
and quantitative manner. The extensive log file contains all kinds of events, keystrokes, mouse, cursor navigation, as well as gaze information (if an eye-tracker is connected) during the translation session. The logged data can also be replayed for visualizing the moves and choices made by the translator during the post-editing process.
An extension of CASMACAT called SEECAT (Speech & Eye-Tracking Enabled Computer
Assisted Translation) is able to recognize speech from any user without any previous training.
Also, in the next prototype of CASMACAT the hand written recognition will be provided.

Whose line is it anyway? Pride movements in Southern contexts
Pride marches are becoming increasingly common and popular in the ‘Global South’ and can be seen as sign of progress towards greater social acceptance of sexual minorities. These movements often appropriate and mimic the semiotic symbols and discursive frames visible in Pride movements in the 'North' such as rainbow flags, and the promotion of individual human rights. However, there is also a degree of recontextualisation of these discourses so that they are relevant to local contexts. There is also a tension visible, both within these movements and between them and wider society.
This paper will focus on newspaper articles as a way of gauging how Pride movements are discursively constructed in the public sphere. I will critically analyse actor representations in a systematic sample of articles from three daily national newspapers from India and South Africa over a period of three years. By highlighting nominational and predicational strategies (Reisigl and Wodak, 2001) the paper will focus on three types of actors: the actual Pride movement, participants of pride and outside actors.
Scots and the politics of double-bind:
Language ideologies and identity constructions in a changing Scotland
Often associated with, inter alia, the rise of the Scottish National Party from the minority to the majority government (between 2007 and 2011), a considerable improvement in the official language policy on the Scots language could have been noted in recent years. However, despite those improvements, the perceived status of Scots is still an open issue subject to contestation, underpinned by common misconceptions of its alleged inferiority to English as well as its historical stigmatisation.
Corresponding with the landmark results of the census question on the Scots language and the Scottish independence referendum, the proposed research aims to investigate interrelated constructions of the Scots language in the contexts of bottom-up negotiation of personal identities (among the language users) and in top-down practices of (collective) nation-building and national self-imagining. After providing the audience with an insight into the characteristics of Scots’ sociolinguistic situation, the talk will discuss the theoretical and methodological design of the author’s PhD research project.

During the past three years, the authors of this abstract have collaborated to produce a new generation of instructional treatments that engage young learners in conversations in which they learn to reason about and construct science explanations as well as learn English when learning scientific concepts. The treatments involve classroom conversations, in which the teacher facilitates conversations where students explain science presented in animations, and conversations in an immersive multimedia environment. The results of these treatments, based on formal evaluations of students’ learning gains, and interviews with students and teachers, indicate that a) students become fully engaged by the instructional treatments, and report that they are motivated to learn science after using them, b) teachers have embraced the pedagogy and believe it is highly beneficial to their teaching effectiveness and their students’ achievement, and c) students who used the treatments achieved significant learning gains, with strong effect sizes, compared to students who received traditional classroom instruction. Our talk will describe and provide demonstrations of two programs, Tablit (kindergartens) and ETOS (primary and junior high schools), which were funded by grants from the EU in Poland.

Charlesa de Gaulle'a w Poznaniu. Swoje podpisy pod tekstem pozozumienia złożyli Dziekan WA, prof. dr hab. Katarzyna Dziubalska-Kołaczyk oraz Dyrektor XVI LO, mgr Andrzej Karaś. Dzięki porozumieniu uczniowie klas dwujęzycznych będą mieli pierwszeństwo uczestnictwa w wydarzeniach otwartych na WA oraz wybranych zajęciach na studiach stacjonarnych. XVI LO ze swojej zapewnia pomoc w organizacj praktyk studenckich oraz realizowaniu projektów grantowych przez pracowników i doktorantów WA.
