2007 Lexicom – a lexicography first-timer’s hands-on experience and the theory of frames
LexMasterClass, Sue Atkins, Michael Rundell and Adam Kilgariff, have organized intensive week-long lexicographic workshops, Lexicoms, for a number of years now (the 2008 workshop is to be held in Barcelona, in July). These are lectures and seminars on some chosen aspects of the theory behind lexicography followed by a series of practical sessions at workstations. Topics vary, from corpus lexicography (designing and building a lexicographic corpus, using the Web-accessible corpora as well as utilizing the Web itself to build a corpus from it, structuring dictionary entries by analyzing corpus data, etc.) to Frame Semantics.
The talk aims to lay the speaker’s personal 2007 Brno Lexicom experience in further detail, with a discussion of the results of the practical tasks the workshop participants were assigned. Special emphasis will however be placed on the presentation of the main assumptions of Frame Semantics, a linguistic theory originated and developed by Charles J. Fillmore, and the implications it has for lexicographic practice, as discussed by Sue Atkins.
Social Stability or Economic Growth?
tvn24 visited IFA, UAM, on February 28, their visit coinciding with that of Irish premier Bertie Ahern to the Polish capital. Speaking to Diarmuid Johnson of the Department of Celtic Languages and Literature, tvn24 asked the visiting professor whether in his view, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was on solid ground when he remarked that Poland can hope to emulate Ireland's economic success. Reasons cited for Tusk's remarks to be treated with levity included: an absence of the requisite entrepreneurial spirit in Polish society; a relative lack of self-confidence and national pride among Poles; demographic differences to the tune of over thirty million people. When asked whether Poland would do well to take a page from the Irish copybook, Prof. Johnson replied that Poland might set the bar of ambition higher and strive, not for short-term econnomic growth, but for long-term social stability.

The third of a series of five ELT presentations / workshops organized by the Center for English Language Teaching Materials at IFA in the academic year 2007/2008 will take place on Friday, March 14th 2008 at 4 p.m. room 601A.
While it seems to be clear that assessment constitutes an integral part of any language course, a lot of teachers do not realize what purposes it may serve and what forms it may take.
In the workshop, we will look at the role and place of feedback in the EFL classroom, the possible different areas of assessment, and the techniques used to evaluate particular skills and abilities. The difference between formative and summative assessment, as two approaches toward evaluating the learners’ progress, as well as the need to complement traditional assessment techniques with what may be referred to as “alternative assessment”, will be explained and focused on in the workshop.

The suffix -ish: Its development and productivity in Middle English
abstract:
The aim of the paper is to provide a clear and comprehensive account of the semantic development and productivity of the OE suffix -isc in Early and Late Middle English. The material used for the study comes from extensive electronic corpora. The analysis brings to light some 10% of the Old English -isc derivatives not included in such distinctive dictionaries as Bosworth and Toller (1898-1921) or Hall (1894 [2000]). Moreover, the information on the origin of Middle English formations provided by the MED online may be sometimes misleading, e.g., some 30%(!) (10 out of about 30) of the -ish derivatives labelled as new EME coinages can actually be traced back to Old English. The last part of the paper is devoted to an investigation of the considerably lower productivity of -ish in Early Middle English as compared to that in Late Middle English.
