By
comparison and contrast one gains valuable insight into social dynamics
– of the country you are studying, but also your own. This is
illustrated on a daily basis in the South African Specialisation at
Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland.
However,
direct experience is also essential to test one's conclusions
against a social reality. This is why we have decided
to give our students the chance to experience South Africa first-hand,
and, while there, to share some of their perspectives and insights with
young South Africans. The result is the Multiversity tour, featuring
academic exchanges with major South African universities, and the
MultiKulti programme, to be presented at South African schools.
Thanks
to our main sponsors, Media24 and Allegro, the tour is now becoming a
reality. Although there are still some funds outstanding, generous
contributions from these two companies mean that the tour is now well
within our reach. We are happy to also offer them something in return,
in the form of video inserts we will create to strengthen Polish-South
African relations within these companies, and in general.
Our plans
are to visit North West University, the University of Pretoria, Fort
Hare, and Stellenbosch University. Here our students will have the
opportunity to participate in lectures and discussions with their South
African peers, on relevant South African and global issues.
The
MultiKulti programme is something of our own creation, which will be
presented at secondary schools throughout the country. This
programme will emphasise the value of diversity in a society, from
European and African perspectives.
Another
valuable component of
the tour is of course getting in touch with the South
African reality, and in this regard, students will visit places of
significance
and partake in various cultural events during our visit.
On the
whole, the process of planning the tour and obtaining funds has also
served as valuable real-world experience for our students, who have
been involved in every step along the way.
