ETOS - E-Tutor of Science

About the project

The project aims to develop and test an innovative program of teaching support ETOS (E-tutor of Science) The program aims to support science teaching at two levels of education: in classes IV–VI of primary school and in classes I–III of junior high school. The final product of the project will be an integrated program of supporting teaching and stimulating students’ interest in the subject of “natural science” in primary schools as well as chemistry, physics and biology in junior high schools. The product will be available for use throughout the country.

The final product of the project is a platform to interact with a virtual teacher-avatar. Technology and methodology of the use of advanced 3D avatars in teaching has been known worldwide for many years. In Poland, however, it is not yet widely used in e-learning platforms or in educational multimedia programs. Studies show that the implementation of the avatar brings measurable effects and significantly improves the user interaction with com- puter applications, which in turn translates into students’ interest in the presented content.
The ETOS program uses dialogue modelling method QTA in class discussion about natural phenomena. Within the QTA, a teacher – using active listening, asking open questions and paraphrasing them – invites to discuss the problem posed, and also activates the individual students to formulate and express their views on natural phenomena. As a result of the exchange of ideas and views, the students can find the scientifically correct explanation. Individualized part of the lesson, which consists in independent work of student with an animated teacher Monica, will take pla- ce through e-learning platform. The platform will include articles collected in the mini-World Wide Web, from which pupils of junior high schools will benefit. The use of mini-World Wide Web is aimed to familiarize students with the academic materials (simplified scientific articles), and master the reflex of searching in the Internet of additional information regarding various aspects of the natural sciences and reflex of searching using English words and phrases if materials in Polish are not available.
The transfer of experiment environment to the virtual world does not require purchasing expensive equipment for the school to carry out scientific experiments. Students will be able to use the platform outside the school, and thus gain access to materials at home.
