The Petition of Edward Henry Hanger
of Mr Howard party in the employ of Mr Peter Retief of
Grahams Town most humbly Sheweth
That on the 8 February last a Fire took
place in the Store and Carpenters Shop of Mr. P. Retief
whereby your Petitioner lost his working Tools to the amount
of Ten Pounds Eight Shillings Sterling which to replace in
this Colony would cost upwards of 300 Rix dollars on your Petitioners
mentioning the loss he had sustained to Captein Somerset
he was graciously pleased to promise him the Sum of Forty
Rix dollars as a present releif and to do what laid in his
power at some future period, but your Petitioner as never
received any thing supposing it to have been forgotten by
Captain Somerset in the hurry of business
That your Petitioner is at a heavy expence not drawing
any Rations & having a Wife and family to support
likewise a Man your Petitioner employs to cultivate
his land
That your Petitioner is much inconvenienced for the
want of Tools not having the means of replacing those he has
lost and most humbly begs that your Excellency will take
your Petitioners case into consideration and under such
assistance to your Petitioner as may meet your
Excellencys approbation And your Petitioner has in
duty bound will ever Pray,
