Coyle, Elizabeth

East Indian Simons Bay May 5 1820

Sir

In hope of landing with Mr and Mrs
Seton I neglected making any communication to the
Governor tho imperiously called on by circumstances
. I have been oppressed _ insulted _ actually thrown
out of my birth (under pretence of making room for a
sick woman _ tho ‘ there is a Sick Bay for such people)
and would have been obliged to sleep out among the
men in the Great Cabin but for the humanity of
Mr Seton who left his bed for me
I take the liberty of mentioning to you that
lest any complaint of mine should be attended to
Parker on Sunday morning got a Certificate of insanity
from Dr Holditchh to my prejudice and (if I be rightly
informed) had it signed by a young Man of the name
of Barch who tho professing medical knowledge _ has
taken out no diploma _ I enclose to you Sir a
statement
Colonel Bird
Colonial Secretary
Cape Town

I made for the satisfaction of Mr McCleland
(upon his humane and iterical interference
in my concern at his request

I have the honour to be
Sir
your most obet humble
Servant
Eliza Coyle
