Governor
The humble Memorial of Thomas Wakeford, a Settler
originally of the party of Mr John Bailie
Sheweth That after continued labour and expense on his
location where he remaind above Three years with but
trifling returns he was induced for a time to remove and
is now residing in Grahams Town where he has
purchased Ground for Building which being of considerable
extent he requires assistance of Capital to complete
his undertakings
Yr Memorialist besides his Location to which he remains
fully entitled (and his expenses there have been witnessd
by persons in authority) possesses other property but
is unwilling to force a Sale that would prove de
detrimental to its Value; for the above
purpose therefore Yr Memorialist respectfully asks
Yr Excellency may please to accept his application
for a portion of Loan to the amount of Eight-
-Hundred Rix. dollars by which he would be
enabled to finish his object, as well as to resume
his location there being now from the increased
population of Grahams Town and Public establishments
at the Kowie River a more likely market for his
produce
Yr Memorialist has for a long time hesitated in his
application to yr. Excellency judging by the Property
with which he arrivd in the Colony his means would
have precluded this request, but must pray the
notice of yr Excellency to Two items. in the
recount of losses he has experienced, Viz: on his
location by continual depredations on his Flock
of Sheep by a drove of Animals, which infected

his neighbourhood taking at one swoop Fifty.
and Since his removal near Grahams Town, by the
Caffres he has lost Sixty Eight head of horned
Cattle and Four Horses, the latter only, has he
recovered at considerable expense, the former still
remaining a total loss
Yr Memorialist in duty bound will ever pray
