Synnot, Walter

Clan William 16th Augt 1820
Sir
It distresses me exceedingly to
be under the necessity of troubling
you so frequently, but I find so many
obstacles to contend with, and my expectations
so frequently disappointed, that _
I fear all my endevours to establish my
family here, will prove fruitless, unless
the difficulties I represent are removed
without loss of time; in the first _
place no steps have been taken to
establish a horse Mill, and I have no
prospect of supporting my party from
the land, for the ensuing year, and _
even if the Mill was removed, the course
of irrigation is interrupted by roads,
which run through the whole of the
ground I intended for a garden, and
Vineyard, and the only land that is fit
for this purpose is my allotment.
I cannot think that public utility _

is the motive for which they are
kept open whin a distance of less than
five Hundred yards either to the right
or left guides to roads that run to the
same point; I left a plan in Mr Stolls
hands which points them out correctly
I represented to you the difficulties
of building & and you obtained me
permission from his excellency the
Governor that I should occupy the
Messengers house. I returned to Clan
William in the full expectation of
establishing my party in the cottage
I have constructed and devoted my
time to raise something for their support
here I am again disappointed, as I see
no steps taken to accommodate the Messenger
else where; Nothing can be of greater moment
to a new settler, than the advantage of a
house, I have been informed that I represent
the house as being more remote from the
Drosdy that it is as in truth on examining
the situation I found the place was not _

correct, having placed the cattle krall at _
a distance, when it forms a side of it. this
plan I did from memory when at the Cape
but not with intention of leading His Excellency
into an error _ and I believe in all material points
my statement was correct _ it was
my intention when I removed my family
into the small chamber they now occupy to _
wait until Mr Du Toi could be provided for _
but I perceive that is not likely
to take place, and we are all crowded among
a store of Boxes & packages that cannot be _
opened for want of room _. If I have requested
too great an indulgence I shall consider
it the greatest favour if you will
inform me candidly that I may
take decided steps and no longer
feel myself an intruder
I have the Honour to be Sir
Your Most obliged _
& faithful Servant
Walter Synnot _
