Crause, Charles

Summer Hill Octr 24th 1824
My Lord
I beg leave to apologize to your
Lordship for this intrusion, and I have
little doubt from the benevolence of your
Lordships disposition of receiving forgiveness
Your Lordship I am persuaded will
be easily convinced, that from the unsettled
state I have been in since my arrival
in the Colony, I have lost great time and
have expended a considerable Sum in
the Support of myself and family having a
Wife and Seven Children this and the loss
I sustained during the flood &c has greatly
reduced my capital; yet I do not despair of
ultimate Success.
I am now residing on the grant
your Lordship manificently granted me
Some time back, I have nearly completed
a large Stone house, and have inclosed
with a bank and ditch about sixty Acres
of land for cultivation, but from the
narrowness of my means I am reduced
to the necessity, of entreating your Lordship
will be induced to take my case into
your Lordships most humane consideration

and grant me a loan of three Thousand Rix
to enable me to carry on business with
advantage
Permit me to return your Lordship
in language the most respectful, my most
grateful thanks, for all the favours
your Lordship has been graciously
pleased to confer on me, and to
assure your Lordship at the same
that I feel the disinclination to
acknowledge my poverty which some
men would, and that I should not have
intruded on your Lordships goodness of
heart, but for my having raised
money on an annuity bond previous
to my leaving England, the entitlement
of which I am compelled to pay
regularly, which reduced my half pay
to twenty pounds annualy.
I cannot apply to the
Settlers fund as I could not recover
it to my conscience to take
money even by way of loan

what I think has been
collected under misrepresentations.
I have the honor to be
Your Lordships
Most obt humble Servt
Charles Crause
To His Excellency the Right Hon.
Lord Charles Henry Somerset
