Port Elizabeth,
Janr 17th 1825
To His Excellency
The Right Honble Lord Charles Somerset
Governor, Commander in Chief
&c &c &c
I beg leave to represent to your
Excellency that I came out to this Colony
as a Settler with the Deal Party, whom,
I soon quitted, having obtaind my discharge
and the Landdrost Lieut Col. Cuyler was
kind enough to procure me a Colonial
Pass _ I spend my time principally
in Accounts, & have been frequently called
upon to write Memorials &c &c to your
Excellency _ the great Increase of
Inhabitants at this place prompts me
to think that your Excellency may soon
be induced to appoint a Notary here, and
I beg to suggest to your Excellency the
great advantage such an Appointment.
would be to this place _ at present
a Person who makes a Contract must
go to Uitenhage, & take his two Bondmen
at

at a great Expence and Loss of time
and as the Number of Inhabitants at
this Port are continually increasing, I am
persuaded such an Appointment would
be a pleasing satisfaction to them, &
they would Feel grateful For it _
Having been used to public
Business, & Formerly a Magistrate at
Sandwich in Kent, & Respectably
connected, as Freeman of said Town
voting For Sir George Warrender _ and
as a Freeman of Canterbury voting
for S. R. Lushington Esgr _ I beg to
Recommend my self to your Excellencys
notice, in case your Excellency should
think proper to make such an appointment,
which I will endeavor to execute
to the best of my Abilities
My Family are not with me
except one Son) but I am anxious
for their being here, and should your
Excellency be pleased to appoint me
to be a Notary here, it would be such
a

pleasing satisfaction to my Friends in
England, that it would not be long
before my Family joind Me
Submitting this to your
Excellencys consideration _
I have the Honor to be
Your Excellencys
Very humble Servant
John Carter
