Uitenhage _ 8 Aug t 1820
Laminal.

Sir
Dr Mac_Munn the Surgeon
to the district of Uitenhage having determined
on relinquishing the appointment
the Inhabitants of the above place have
unanimously expressed this earnest
wish, that I might be appointed his
Successor, as having lived some little time
in the neighbourhood, and been successful
in seminal surgical operations,I have
performed, they feel a confidence in
me, they could not repose in a Stranger
but notwithstanding their solicitations

the Landrost in consequence of a promise
to appoint Dr OFlinn, who is now
district Surgeon at Bathurst, refuses
to recommend me to Your notice _
I therefore, and at the request of the Inhabitants
take the liberty of writing you on
the subject, and should feel particularly
obliged by Your giving me the appointment ___
When at Cape Town I should have done
myself the honor of waiting upon you
in person, and to deliver the Box I brought
from aminton and which I was particularly
desired to give you into your own hands

but the positive orders which were issued
that none but the Heads of Parties should
be permitted to land prevented me,
and I was under the necessity of sending
it by my Brother in Law Mr. Damant _
I have the honor to be
Your most Obt Humble Serv
J. Atherstone
To Colonel Bird
