Ames, John

Uitenhage Febr 6th. 1821
Hond Sir
I hope you will pardon my troubling you with this for the purpose of
obtaining my Colonial Pass which I took liberty requesting when I had the honor of
seeing you at Algoa Bay prior to your Embarkation on Board the Aurora for Cape Town.
I beg leave to state I have no grant of Land, but was a free Settler & obtained the
necesary discharge from the head of the party Hezekia Sephton) which I delivered to
Mr Onkroid Secretary at Grahams Town who promised the pass shd. be ready in One
month & on my applying at the expiration of that time, was informed my
papers were mislaid.
I had therefore again had to obtain from the head of the party a second
certificate & take it to Uitenhage & on my delevering it to Coll Cuyler Landrost
has kindly promised it would be received in three weeks. & who desired me
to remain untill I had it. Eight weeks are now elapsed without receiving
it in great anxiety expecting to meet my Family at the Cape.
you will probably recollect me from the circumstance of my Mistaking
you for another Gentleman a Merchant) of the same name & from such mistake
wrote to you, & on my seeing you, was generously promised to attend on my
applying for a Pass shd I need one
Captne. Thoss. Pearson of the Aurora promised he would again mention
my name to you who well knew me as I regularly dined with him
It would be in vain to expect I could obtain at any other place than Cape
Town my living Surveyor Engraver & printer) my Wife is eminent as a painter
on Velvet & Minature Painter, & whose Maiden productions were well known
at the Exhibition Somerset House in the name of Nicolle your well
known attention to application to all Her Majestys Subject assures me that
this my supplication will with your usual kindness be forgiven and believe
me Hond. Sir
with every gratitude
& high respect
I remain your Obedient Servant
