The Petition of Edward Henry Hanger /
of M\r/ Howard party in the employ of M\r/ Peter Retief of /
Grahams Town most humbly Sheweth /
That on the 8\th/ February last a Fire took /
place in the Store and Carpenters Shop of M\r./ P. Retief /
whereby your Petitioner lost his working Tools to the amount /
of Ten Pounds Eight Shillings Sterling which to replace in /
this Colony /would cost\ upwards of 300 Rix dollars on your Petitioners /
mentioning the los+s he had sustained to Captein Somerset /
he was graciously pleased to promise him the Sum of Forty /
Rix dollars as a present releif and to do what laid in his /
power at some future period, but your Petitioner as never /
received any thing supposing it to have been forgotten by /
Captain Somerset in the hurry of busines+s /
That your Petitioner is at a heavy expence not drawing /
any Rations 7+ having a Wife and family to support /
likewise a Man your Petitioner employs to cultivate /
his land /
That your Petitioner is much inconvenienced for the /
want of Tools not having the means of replacing those he has /
lost and most humbly begs that your Excellency will take /
your Petitioners case into consideration and under such /
as+sistance to your Petitioner as may meet your /
Excellencys approbation And your Petitioner has in /
duty bound will ever Pray, /
