Henry Somerset Governor and Commander in Chief of His Majesty’s /
Castle, Town and Settlement 7+c 7+c 7+c of the Cape of Good Hope. /
The humble Petition of Richard Harvey of Graham’s Town /
Sheweth. /
That your Petitioner came to this Colony with a party /
of settlers under the direction of Major George Pigot, who /
he duly served for term of his engagement, but not having /
any allotment of land as+signed to him on which he could /
gain a Maintenance and being by trade a wheelwright /
and carpenter he commenced busines+s in Graham’s Town /
where he has /been\ married /to\ the daughter of M\r/ Richard Harvey /
and as he has a prospect of a family and house rent being /
very high, he has engaged to purchase a spot of land on /
which it is intention to erect a good and substantial /
house, but being a young beginner in busines+s, he is much /
restrained for the want of a small Capital to enable /
him to fulfill such desirable purposed, as his trades /
and his industry might improve. /
Your Petitioner most humble prays your Ex=cellency /
will be pleased to grant him the loan of /
1000 rixdollars out of the Colonial Loans for which he /
will propose most eligible and undeniable security, /
and Your Petitioner most humbly requests that your /
Excellency will be pleased to make the neces+sary enquiries /
through the medium of Harry Rivers Esq\r/ Landdrost /
of /

of Albany as to your Petitioner’s Moral and Religious /
Character and also of his industrious habits. /
And Your Petitioner as he is in duty bound will /
