Green, James Samuel

To His Excellency The Right Honourable /
General Lord Charles Henry Somerset /
Governor of His Majesty’s Castle; Town and /
Settlement of The Cape of Good Hope /
7+c 7+c 7+c /
May it please your Excellency /
The Memorial of James Samuel Green humbly /
Sheweth /
That your Excellency’s Memorialist is a native of New York in /the united States\ /
{North America}, but has faithfully served His Majesty the King /of\ G\t/ Britain /
during the long period of 25 years, and fought under his triumphant /
Flag off Trafalgar, under the command of the immortal Admiral Lord /
Nelson, and at the taking of the Isle of France under General Abercomby. /
That your Excellency’s Memorialist petitioned for his discharge and /
obtained it, while on board His Majesty’s Ship „Nicest” under the command of /
Admiral Stockwood, lying off Cape Town, and consequently he has no /
pension, nor does even solicit any, but begs leave with all humility, /
to state to your Excellency, that he is so seriously suffering under the /
effects of impaired vison, which originated at the Kowie (under Mr M\c/ Cory /
the Harbour Master) that he is thereby rendered incapable of providing /
for his future support, and is now in a state of distres+s for the common /
neces+saries of life, which he is persuaded, will excite your Excellency’s /
clemency and compas+sion /
That your Excellency’s Memorialist has a kind and venerable Father /
now living in New York in good circumstances, and who would receive /
him with that parental affection which has ever distinguished his /
character, and feel a pleasure in providing for his future maintenance, /
could he reach his hospitable roof, and therefore having spent the prime /
of this days in his Majesty’s service, and left it with a good character, /
he appeals with some degree of confidence to your Excellency, as the as the \noble/ /repres=entative / of the British Sovereign\ in this part of his Dominions, and prays that you will be /
graciously pleased, to allow him, a free pas+sage to his native country /
with neces+saries for the Voyage, and your Memorialist as in duty bound /
will ever pray /
Grahams Town March 8\th/ 1824 /
The Mark of X /
James Samuel Green /
