Cadle, Sarah

To His Excellency The Right Honourable /
General Lord Charles Hy Somerset /
Governor of His Majesty’s Castle, Town and /
Settlement of The Cape of Good Hope /
7+c 7+c 7+c /
May it please your Excellency /
The Memorial of Sarah Cadle humbly /
Sheweth /
That your Excellency’s Memorialist is the Widow of the late /
John Cadle, who was employed by his Majesty’s Colonial Government /
in a contract for the repair of the public roads from Grahams Town to the /
Mouth of the river Kowie, but was unfortunately drowned in front of his /
own House during the tremendous flood of October last, having been attending /
to the duties of his vocation, and in that he fell a sacrifice, leaving Memorialist /
in a state of pregnancy with Five helples+s orphans, totally unprovided for /
and in all probability before this reaches your Lordship’s hand, the number /
will be increased to Six. /
That your Excellency’s Memorialist being thus unfortunately /
situated /in\ a foreign Land, at an immense /distance\ from all her friends looks up to in /
great humility to the wisdom and goodnes+s of your Lordship, as the humane /
and generous Parent of your People, to render her some pecuniary as+sistance /
in this day of exceeding great calamity, so as to enable her to maintain /
the arduous struggle with succes+s, in the support of her infant family /
That your Excellency’s Memorialist begs leave to state that her /
residence has always been devoted to the accommodation of Travellors /
and if your Lordship, in your great philanthropy would be graciously pleased /
to grant her a Loan of 500 RixDollars, she would thereby be enabled /
to carry on the aforesaid concern with advantage to herself from the general /
feeling of public sympathy which has been expres+sed towards her under /
circumstances so peculiarly distres+sing. /
That your Excellency’s Memorialist does not however solicit the exercise /
of your Lordships paternal goodnes+s in thus favouring her without offering /
the most ample security for the use of the public Money /
such as she feels confident would not be rejected by the Local authorities and therefore /
should your Excellency deign to grant her a favourable answer to the prayer /
contained in this her Memorial, she will ever feel herself in duty bound to pray /
Salem Hills N\r/ Grahams Town /
