Memorial of Edward Turvey, /
Landscape painter and Drawing Master, /
Humbly Sheweth that /
your Mem\rst/ in common with the Other /
Setlers has Sufferd many tryals and /
privations, more particularly on account /
of his profes+sion not being in request in /
the first years of this Colony. (nor induced /
untill very lately) together with his not /
being able to Retain in his Service, those /
Servents he Brought out with him, _ /
It would be harmful to recount /
to your Excellency the difficulties your /
Mem\rst/ has had to contend with, in /
Endevours to Support an aged Father /
above 80 years of age (dead within 2 last years ) /
a Wife and five Helples+s Children the three /
Eldest of which are Females, His Eldest Boy /
now only 23 years of age, /
>
Their is nothing your Mem\rs/ has /
found more injurious then the want /
of a propper place to draw in, particularly /
Landscapes in Oil the Sending of which /
to England of Views of this Colony would /
produce a profitable Return, but those /
your Mem\rst/ has attempted with the /
Exception of 2. has been destroyd by /
the Dust before they could be furnished /
Your Mem\rst/ has purchased /
a piece of Ground in Grahams Town /
for the purpose of Building a House /
on that would answer his purpose /
but finds his present means inadequate to /
to Compleat it _ /
The prayer therefore of /
Your Mem\rst/ is that your Excellency /
would be gratiously pleased to /
advance your Mem\rst/ a loan of /
Six Hundred Rds for which your /
Mem\r/ can procure two Securities /
and would also make over the /
>
land, and House propos+sed to be Compleated /
in addition, and your Mem\rs/ as in /
duty Bound will Ever Pray /
Your Mem\rs/ begs leave to State /
to your Excellency that He was /
personally Known to and patronaged for /
12 years by the Dowager Countes+s of /
Liverpool, through whose interest He /
obtained His Grant in this Colony /
and Had the Honor of bearing /
letters of Recommendation from Mrs /
Ladyship to your Excellency who /
being in England on His arrival /
in the Colony presented them to /
Colonil Somerset . /
