Honey, Jeremiah

Hope 7+c. 7+c. 7+c. /
The humble Memorial /
of Jeremiah Honey of Governors Kop /
Miles East of Grahams Town. /

Sheweth that he was /
Summoned before the Court of Landdrost /
and Heemraaden on the first instant /
on a charge of Smuggling, to which he /
pleaded guilty, under the following /
circumstances, an information laid for /
the sole purpose of obtaining a fine /
A Man being sent to his house under the /
most apparent distres+s, begging in the /
most vehement manner for some spirits /
to refresh him on his journey, remarking /
that he had some bread, which he /
could carry no further, that it was of/
no use to him, and that if he could ob=tain /
a Small quantity of Spirits
to asist him on the road we should /
very much oblidge him that your /
Memorialist desired his wife to comply /
with his request, not in the smallest /
degree suspecting that any trap was /
laid to ensnare him, on that he was /
committing any breach of the Law. /
that for this act your Memorialist was /
fined in the Sum of Three Hundred Rix /
Dollars and to pay the expences. /
>
That the said Court having recommended /
your Memorialist to lay his case before /
your Excellency, for your known humane /
consideration That your Memorialist most /
humbly begs your attention to his situation /
that your Memorialist has a Wife and four
Children (all girls) to maintain by his indus=try,/
that he is an agriculturalist, and has /
been employed as such since his residence /
in this colony. that the small property he /
was enabled to bring out has been employed /
in conjunction with John Marshall to /
obtain a Waggon and Oxen, that they /
have been employed principally in bring=ing /
manure from Grahams Town (finding
that the land would produce nothing without /
that your Memorialist (with the as+sis=tance /
of his partner) has enclosed and /
manured nearly Six acres of Land, that /
some succes+s has been the result of his /
application, that the only remuneration /
he has ever received has been the sale /
of some Vegetables in Grahams Town /
that your Memorialist has lost Eight /
Cattle by the Caffres, that he was, while /
at Plough, in July last wounded by /
having a large Iron pin run through /
his leg. that totally deprived his Wife /
and family of his exertions for nearly /
three Months, that he is unable to /
pay any fine, as it would be attended /
with the utter ruin of his family./
that your Memorialist is ready and /
willing to make the most Sacred /
Oath if required to the truth of this /
Memorial, and that he could not /
in any case suppose that he could /
have offended against the Laws by /
doing what he considered an Act /
>
of charity, and your Memorialist feels /
the more distres+sed in this case, /
from the trap being laid by a person /
of the name of Richard White who /
knew the distres+s we have and are /
in for want of Bread, which person /
can have acted from no other motive /
than that of obtaining a fine to prevent /
an impending prosecution that your /
Memorialist submits himself to the /
humane consideration of your Excellency /
and is in duty bound to pray. /
